Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga Yoga in Norway – A Journey Back to Yourself
We often seek support and reassurance in the world around us, hoping to ease the tension in our minds filled with constant thoughts, emotions, and uncertainty. But how often do we look inward?
We tell ourselves the same story every day—who we are, what we want, what we fear. Yet few of us truly know ourselves. What happens when life tests us? When challenges arise? The truth is, we rarely meet those parts of ourselves until we step outside our comfort zone.
Ashtanga Yoga offers exactly that opportunity. It’s not just a physical practice—it’s a tool for deep self-inquiry and personal transformation. Through movement, breath, and repetition, we gradually uncover the layers we’ve built around who we think we are — but only when that movement is grounded in healthy biomechanics and guided by clear methodological principles.
Sustainable progress comes not from pushing, but from understanding how the body truly works.
What Is Ashtanga Yoga?
Ashtanga Yoga is a method based on a set sequence of postures, synchronized with a powerful breathing technique called Ujjayi, energy locks (bandhas), and focused gaze points (drishti). This unique combination could transform the physical flow into a moving meditation.
But over time, I’ve stepped away from the rigidity of that method.
Today, I draw inspiration from the teachings of Simon Borg-Olivier and Patrick McKeown, who both emphasize that less is more — that sustainable movement and breath must support the nervous system, not overstimulate it.
My current practice is rooted in slower, conscious movement, refined breathing, and a deep respect for the body’s changing needs.
The practice consists of six series that progress in intensity. Most practitioners begin with the Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa), designed to detoxify the body and build a strong foundation. Over time, more advanced series focus on the nervous system and developing unwavering strength, control, and concentration.
Ashtanga Yoga and Mindful Living
At the heart of Ashtanga Yoga lies vinyasa – the synchronisation of movement and breath. Each transition is paired with either an inhale or an exhale, creating a steady, meditative rhythm. This consistency brings us into the present moment, while conscious breathing helps regulate the nervous system, shifting us from a sympathetic (stress) response into a parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) state.
What makes Ashtanga Yoga unique is its structured sequence. You repeat the same series of postures each time you practice, which helps eliminate distractions and sharpen focus. However, this doesn’t mean that each asana should always look or feel the same.
In my classes, I adapt the sequence to suit each student’s individual needs. Sometimes we skip poses, use yoga props, or focus on specific areas of the body to support healthy progression. The goal is not perfection, but presence and sustainability.
I value Ashtanga because it teaches that discipline often matters more than motivation. Consistency in practice brings the deepest transformation – not just in the body, but in how we move through life.
My Experience: Did Ashtanga Yoga Change My Life?
Ashtanga yoga was more than just a form of exercise for me – it was a way of life. This dynamic and disciplined practice helped me grow not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally. Through the repetition of breath and movement, I found space for deep self-reflection and a new perspective on life.
Practicing Ashtanga yoga in Norway – especially here in the raw, untamed beauty of Northern Norway – became my sanctuary. Yet, I don’t see it as something magical or all-powerful. I’ve experienced its transformative potential, but I remain grounded in the belief that yoga is a beautiful complement to many other forms of movement and self-care, not a replacement for them all.
Today, I continue to practice yoga close to nature, inspired by the Arctic light, the silence, and the powerful presence of the wild. My journey with Ashtanga has taught me discipline, humility, and resilience – lessons that extend far beyond the yoga mat.
Whether you’re just starting or looking to reconnect with your body and breath in a meaningful way, yoga in nature offers a unique opportunity to deepen your practice and reconnect with nature – and with yourself.

I teach Ashtanga Yoga in the Mysore style, offering a deeply personal and supportive approach. Each student receives one-on-one guidance, allowing the practice to unfold at your own pace—regardless of your age, experience level, physical condition, or reason for stepping onto the mat.
This is not a led class ( just the counting)—instead, you are met exactly where you are. Whether you’re new to yoga or have years of practice behind you, I provide adjustments, encouragement, and modifications tailored to your unique needs. Together, we’ll create a safe, mindful, and sustainable practice that evolves with you.
In addition to in-person classes in Northern Norway, I also offer online Ashtanga yoga sessions, which I find equally effective—sometimes even more so.
